Double Glazing and Draught Proofing
All new or replacement box sash windows have to comply with the Government's new
glazing regulations - Document L.
Document L spells out new, compulsory, standards for windows' heat retention. It means
in practice that to reach those standards all new or replacement windows have to be
double glazed; listed buildings being the exception.
Please see Complying with new insulation regulations
But my problem is that my existing, traditional, box sash windows are single glazed.
Can they really be matched by double glazed windows?
Yes, they can - Double glazed units can be used with Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian timber glazing
beads and bars to preserve the character of your house, perfectly.
How do I get rid of draughts and noise?
Your window units can be manufactured with special internal nylon seals which cut out some 85%
of air flow and keep most of the dust and noise out.
Audio glass may be used on the outside of your double glazed unit.
What will the special seals do to the traditional appearance of my windows?
The seals are made of white nylon, moulded into a timber profile and finished to match the frame.
So they too contribute to preserving the traditional character.
How can I make sure that I acquire windows that meet all the important performance criteria?
Use an accredited supplier and check that your windows meet the following standards -
B.S. 6375 & B.S. 5368 part 1 - Air permeability.
B.S. 6375 & B.S. 5368 part 2 - Water tightness.
B.S. 6375 & B.S. 5368 part 3 - Wind resistance, strength and safety.
