NEW - Tougher Government Glazing Regulations
All new or replacement box sash windows, installed after April 2002, have to comply with
Document L, which is a considerable toughening up of the Government's glazing regulations.
Document L?
Document L deals with the heat saving properties, the "U-Value", of windows.
The better heat saving properties, the lower theU-Value.
Do I benefit from Document L?
Yes, you do. All new or replacement windows have to be manufactured to meet the new,
higher demands on insulation, giving you more warmth and comfort as well as better heating economy.
In fact, it means that, unless it is a listed building, the new or replacement windows have to be double
glazed, whether or not they were before.
But can I have double glazed box sash windows that actually match my existing traditional ones?
How can I be sure that my new or replacement windows do comply?
Windows that comply with the new regulations are accredited by the National Physical Laboratory.
Your windows will be supplied with certificates that authenticate compliance.
Ensure that the certificate covers the complete window and not just the glazed units - this is important for your windows to meet the standards.

How can I tell if my supplier is accredited ?
Yes it is - as long as you use an accredited supplier. All installations must be either registered
at your local councils building control department to obtain a certificate of compliance.
Alternatively, FENSA, has been set up to enable window companies self certify
installations to customers without the need to pass through the Local Authority .
Random checks will be made by FENSA to ensure registered installers meet the standards.
So, it is in your interest to ensure that your supplier is a FENSA registered member.
