Improved Security for sash windows

Improved Security with Box Sash Windows

How can I make my windows more secure?

All new or replacement box sash windows, installed after April 2002, have to comply with Document L.

Although Document L deals with the heat saving properties, the u-value, of windows, it has the effect of improving the security as well. To meet the heat saving standards your new or replacement windows simply have to be double glazed, whether they were before or not (listed buildings being the exception).

For more information on Document L, click on NEW - Tougher Government Glazing Regulations.

To meet the heat saving standards a double glazed unit consists of one layer of "K" glass to the inside, to retain heat, and standard float glass on the outside.

For improved security you can have one or both layers of glass upgraded to safety glass, which makes your window much more of a challenge for a potential intruder.

Can I make the locking of a Box Sash Window more effective?

Yes. In addition to the window's standard catch you can have an additional barrel lock, a sash stop, fitted to the upper sash. You operate it with a key. When it is locked, it stops the sashes from passing each other, thereby keeping your window securely shut.
